Rwandan-backed rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo are still arresting and executing suspected dissidents a week after a mutiny in the rebel-held eastern city of Kisangani, a U.N. official said.
"There is no fighting in the city, but there are deaths," said Amos Namanga Ngongi the U.N. special representative to the vast, mineral-rich central African country.
"People are being arrested and executed," he told reporters. The Rally for Congolese Democracy (RCD), one of three foreign-backed rebel groups fighting in the former Zaire, said a week ago it had crushed an uprising by a handful of rebel dissidents who had taken control of at least one radio station.
"A week later we are still receiving worrying reports of serious human rights abuses," said Ngongi. The RCD, which controls Kisangani, at the weekend gave a death toll of 29, but the city's catholic bishop said the local clergy had counted 50 corpses, adding a further 50 people had gone missing since the mutiny. Ngongi did not give a figure, but U.N. sources confirmed that civilians were among the dead.
At least 20 Congolese blindfolded army officers were seen being transported aboard a lorry and were later executed. Their bodies were found in the Tshopo River. These were reportedly RCD/Goma dissidents who recently created a splinter group called RCD/Original that staged the uprising.
