Sami Manie Al-Shamlan, who was sentenced to be beheaded for killing Ali Al-Khaldi, was spared the death sentence after he received a pardon. Prince Sultan Bin Abdul Aziz mediated the case and persuaded the victim's family to accept blood money instead of the beheading, in accordance with Islamic Shariah law. The SR5 million blood money was paid by Prince Sultan.
The murder occurred as the result of a fight between the killer and the victim following a football match between their two soccer teams in Dammam. Sami spent three years in jail waiting for execution until he was pardoned.
