They said Ali Qahtani was angered by his father's decision to spare the killer's life, which was announced to a large crowd in the southern town of Abha moments before the killer was due to be executed in public.
As the crowd celebrated, Qahtani brandished a knife and tried to attack his father and then the killer, who was being driven away. He was shot dead by police.
