Search and excavation operations to find out the fate of those executed and buried in mass graves by the deposed Saddam regime were ongoing. The Political Prisoners Association (PPA) oversaw the excavations in Maysan Governorate. These led to the discovery of a mass grave within the compounds of the 4th Army Corps, north of the city of Al-Amarah and towards the main road to Basra. The secretary-general of the PPA, Jasim Muhammad Khalaf, told the Al-Ittihad newspaper that the team which completed the excavations found the remains of women and children among the victims. The number of people buried in the mass grave was not known.
