Senator Corneliu Vadim Tudor, leader of the Greater Romania Party (PRM, the second-biggest party in parliament,) presented the case of Romanian patriot Ilie Ilascu, currently a PRM senator, to the president of the European Democrats' Political Group, to which the PRM is an affiliate. Ilascu has been imprisoned by the Tiraspol separatist authorities for several years and sentenced to death. Tudor announced that the Romanian delegates to the Council of Europe's Parliamentary Assembly will soon put forward a motion or a resolution requiring Ilascu's release from prison not only on human rights grounds, but on humanitarian grounds as well, given the fact that Ilascu is seriously ill. The document will also include a request that Ilascu stand trial in a European capital city, such as Paris or Prague.
