Senator Rodolfo Biazon proposed amending the Death Penalty Law to make the selling of firearms and other weapons to enemies of the state by members of the military and police a crime punishable by death through firing squad. Biazon, a member of the Senate committee on national defence and security, pushed the proposal following allegations that some military officers colluded with the Abu Sayyaf Group, which led to the bandits' escape during a siege in Lamitan, Basilan. "No crime could be more heinous than when those who are entrusted to maintain peace and order in communities and protect the citizenry, for a profit, assist in arming individuals who commit acts of hostility with the duly constituted authorities," the former Armed Forces chief stressed.
