Senegal has executed only two people since independence in 1960.
The first execution took place in 1965.
Moustapha Lo was shot by firing squad for the attempted murder of the first president of Senegal, Leopold Sedar Senghor.
The second person to be executed was Abdou Ndaffa Faye for the murder of an MP for Mbour, Demba Diop.
There have been no execution since this one, in 1967.
Since then, all those convicted of murder have been sentenced to life imprisonment. However, when the government revised the constitution in 2001, President Abdoulaye Wade resisted calls for capital punishment to be abolished completely and so it remained on the statutes.
Senegal has enjoyed uninterrupted civilian rule and a strong tradition of tolerance and democracy since independence from France in 1960.
