Senior U.S. District Judge John T. Nixon ordered the death sentence for Ronald Harries be vacated, saying that Harries' defence lawyers, prosecutors and the trial court made errors during sentencing.
The ruling sends the case back to the state courts for re-sentencing.
Harries, now 51, was sentenced to death in 1981 for the murder of Rhonda Green during a robbery earlier that year.
Nixon's 93-page opinion marks the fifth time since 1994 that he has reversed a death sentence.
