Seven lawmakers in the Lithuanian parliament, in response to tragic developments in US, called for the re-instatement of death penalty and related constitutional changes, and argued that this would not harm the Baltic state's EU bid.
The MPs, from the centre-left Social Liberal and right-wing Christian Democrat factions, suggested appealing to the Council of Europe concerning a repeated debate on giving the death penalty not only to war criminals but also terrorists and architects of terror acts.
"The people of our country were horror-struck as they learned about terrorist attacks in New York and Washington. These attacks which are qualified as acts of war against the civilised world prove that we also have to take precautionary measures," the group statement said.
"We can state that death penalty will not deter fanatic "kamikazes" from attacks but can serve as a good preventive measure to hold back their aides..." the Lithuanian MPs said.
