Londoner Reid is being held in Boston accused of interfering with a flight crew.
He was foiled trying to blow up an American Airlines plane in December 2001 and sources now say he will be accused of trying to destroy the jetliner.
Meanwhile, intelligence experts believe Reid may have been on a terrorist scouting mission after cracking al-Qaeda computer files.
Details of a trip identical to the 28-year-old's tour of Amsterdam, Israel, Turkey and Pakistan in July 2001 and August were found by US hackers on a computer seized in Kabul.
