Since the death penalty was reinstated, Florida has had the most inmates (18) released from death row after evidence of their innocence emerged. Joseph Nahume Green had his capital conviction overturned by the Florida Supreme Court in 1999 because of incompetent testimony at his trial. After 7 years of imprisonment, Green was released in July without bond and, if all charges are dropped, he may become the nineteenth inmate freed from death row. The Florida Supreme Court has found trial errors in 83% of the initial death-penalty appeals it has reviewed so far this year. The "initial appeal" is the one automatically granted to every inmate sentenced to die in Florida's electric chair. As a result, the court has either converted sentences to life in prison or ordered retrials or resentencing in those cases. Nationwide, about one third of death-penalty convictions or sentences are overturned.
