Singaporean national Yeo See Soon, charged with drug trafficking under Section 39(b) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable with the death penalty, was overjoyed when High Court judge Datuk Arifin Jaka ruled that the charge be amended to one of possession under Section 12(2) of the same Act. Arifin ruled that the chemist in the case had failed to analyse the required 10 per cent of the drugs seized, a requirement under Section 37(J) of the act. Yeo, 60, had been arrested at 6.30pm on August 17, 2000, at Jalan Ungku Puan, Johor Baru, and was found in possession of 13.9 grams of heroin and 64.2 grams of morphine. After the amended charge was explained to him by his lawyer Rosli Kamaruddin, Yeo quickly pleaded guilty. Arifin sentenced him to the maximum five years jail and ordered the sentence to run from the date of arrest.
