Six drug runners were sentenced to death and four others given life imprisonment by a southern Chinese court after being convicted of trafficking some 58 kilograms (127 pounds) of heroin, state press said.
The gang led by Wu Zhangguang were sentenced by an intermediate court in Beihai city, southern Guangxi province, for trafficking the drugs from neighbouring Yunnan province between May 2002 and March 2003, Xinhua news agency said.
The drugs were intended to be shipped through Guangxi's provincial capital of Nanning for drug markets in neighbouring Guangdong province, the report said.
One of the convicted traffickers was given a suspended death sentence, meaning that it was likely his sentence would be commuted to a life term.
