Six eminent Tamil writers appealed to the President and Tamil Nadu Governor to grant clemency to death row convict [identified only as] Govindasamy who was still awaiting execution in a Coimbatore jail sixteen years after having committed a crime. Govindasamy was charged with killing five members of a family in a village feud in 1984, but was acquitted by the trial judge in 1987. Ten years later, the Madras High Court overturned the acquittal and sentenced him to death. His appeal was rejected by the Supreme Court, and the President and Governor have refused clemency.
