Softly chanting "There is no God but Allah" until he lost consciousness, a Pakistani man was put to death by injection on November 14 for the slayings of two CIA employees in 1993.
The execution of Aimal Khan Kasi heightened fears of possible retaliation against Americans, and the State Department warned Americans abroad to be on alert. After Kasi's conviction in 1997, four Americans were shot to death in Karachi, Pakistan.
In Kasi's hometown of Quetta, an extra 2,000 heavily armed paramilitary troops patrolled the streets the day after his execution, though there were no immediate signs of violence.
Kasi, 38, confessed to the slayings of Frank Darling, 28, and Lansing Bennett, 66, saying he was angry over CIA meddling in Muslim nations.
About 80 death penalty opponents held a candlelight vigil in a field near the Greensville Correctional Centre. A Muslim cleric read a prayer in English and Arabic.
Hours before the execution, the US Supreme Court rejected an appeal and Gov. Mark R. Warner denied a request for clemency, saying Kasi had "shown absolutely no remorse for his actions."
"We will spend time in prayer for Kasi, that God will have mercy on his soul, for his family, that there be no terrorism reprisal, and for world peace," the family of Frank Darling said in a statement.
