SOMALIA'S ISLAMISTS ESTABLISH APPEALS COURT

Islamists who control the capital and much of southern Somalia set up an appeals court to rule on the decisions of all clan-based Islamic courts in the capital.
The appeals court was formed following public complaints about wide variations in the rulings of about 16 Islamic courts in Mogadishu, said Sheik Abdiqadir Ali Omar, a senior member of the Islamic courts' executive council.
"This new court will exactly assume the same role of a supreme court. There will be a uniformity in issuing judgments," said Omar. "Any convicted person has the right to appeal," to it, he said.
The court will be officially known as the Banadir Court.
