in Stuart, a Martin County jury has recommended the death penalty for a man convicted of murdering 3 women who were sexually assaulted and strangled in 2004.
Eugene Wayman McWatters Jr. was found guilty Sept. 28 of first-degree murder and sexual battery against Jacqueline Bradley, 43, Christal Wiggins, 29, and Carrie Caughey, 18.
Jurors voted 10-2 in favor of death for the murders of Christal Wiggins and Carrie Caughey, and 9-3 for death in the murder of Jackie Bradley, the first killing in the spree.
No date has been set for Circuit Judge Larry Schack to make the final decision on sentencing.
McWatters confessed to the murders in a statement recorded by police.
But defense attorney Bob Udell said Wednesday that McWatters still maintains his innocence.
