Some six thousand Kurds from France and Germany took to the streets of Strasbourg, home of the European Court of Human Rights, to demand the release of jailed Kurdish separatist leader Abdullah Ocalan.
The human rights court is due to rule this year on a bid by Ocalan's supporters to overturn the death sentence imposed by Turkey. Ocalan was the head of an armed struggle for self-rule since 1984 by Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) guerrillas in the mainly Kurdish southeast of Turkey.
