South African traditional leaders called for a referendum on the reinstatement of death penalty for rapists.
"Since the rape incidents against children have been escalating, it would be wise for the government to ask from the people a solution regarding the matter (death penalty)," the leaders said in a statement after their meeting in Warmbaths, Northern Province.
They condemned the recent spate of sexual abuses against children.
"The myth that sleeping with a young girl or a virgin cures HIV/ AIDS is also condemned and all men should refrain from that," the traditional leaders said.
A recent spate of rapes involving babies as young as five-month-old, eight-month-old and nine-month-old have rocked the country, giving rise to calls for harsher punishment against the perpetrators.
