The increase of child rapes and abuse in South Africa was an indictment of the country, African National Congress president Winnie Madikizela-Mandela said.
She was speaking to reporters after she and several Gauteng provincial government officials came out to support a demonstration against child abuse.
On December 1, a five-month-old baby was raped in a room inside a defunct Joubert Park cinema building in Johannesburg. Two suspects, aged 17 and 25, were arrested in connection with this incident and appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on charges of rape
"The sentence should be in the place of capital punishment that we did away with. We did not have this kind of ills before."
