Spain's government would continue providing consular assistance to Eva Maria Monfort, a Spaniard whose Moroccan husband, Bouchain Maghder, faced the death penalty for his role in the May 2003 terrorist bombings in Casablanca. In reply to a question a lawmaker from Spain's centre-right Catalan nationalist party CiU posed in the legislature, the Spanish administration said it would keep "urging the continuation of the moratorium on the execution of the death penalty" in Morocco. In its response, the administration said it "has inquired (after Buchain Maghder) on several occasions" and expressed to the Moroccan government "Spain's and the European Union's rejection of the death penalty." Maghder was among those convicted of the May 16, 2003, attacks that left a total of 43 people dead in Casablanca, including 12 suicide bombers.
