The Valencia Biennial was the first organisation from the art world to take a stand against the death penalty.
In a joint initiative with Hands Off Cain, Valencia's Under Secretary for Culture Consuelo Ciscar, called for the commutation of Jerome Mallet's death sentence to a life term. Mallet was set to die by lethal injection in Missouri on July 11 for killing James Froemsdorf, a state highway patrolman.
Jerome's picture, taken by Oliviero Toscani for the "We, on death row" advertising campaign, is featured in the The body of Art exhibition housed in the Convento del Carmen.
Toscani, Biennial director Luigi Settembrini, exhibition director Achille Bonito Oliva, and Hands Off Cain secretary Sergio D'Elia joined Ms Ciscar to launch the initiative at a press conference on Sunday, July 1 at 12.00 CET at the Convento del Carmen.
