Speaking on the issue of the attempted coup on November 25, 2002, Turkmen President Saparmyrat Nyyazow stated during the session of the People's Council that: "Turkmenistan is a country which is successfully integrated into the world community and by removing the death penalty as the supreme penalty, we proclaimed the principle of humanity and humaneness. As an example for the countries of the region today, we can not take a step back and restore the practice of the death penalty."
