SRI LANKA: DEATH SENTENCE ON HIKKADUWAUC CHAIRMAN

Vinnie Kariyawasam, Chairman of the Hikkaduwa Urban Council, and his accomplice Thirimadura Harischandra De Silva were sentenced to death in Sri Lanka. High Court Judge Amal Thilekeratne found them guilty of murdering a businessman in Thotagamuwa. They allegedly shot R. Jayaratne De Silva of Thotagamuwa on or around May 19, 1995. The trial continued for over ten years before the verdict was given at the High Court of Balapitiya.
