Lakshman Jayaweera, a Sri Lankan man, was sentenced to death following a five-year trial for possessing 4.64 grams of heroin. Judge Sunil Rakapakse of the Colombo High Court, Sri Lanka, said he imposed the death penalty because of his eight previous convictions for possessing heroin and because he had sold the drug.
