Sri Lanka was a cosponsor of the amendments presented by Egypt (A/C.3/54/L.31 and L.32) to the resolution for a moratorium on executions presented by the European Union at the 54th UN General Assembly (A/C.3/54/L.8/Rev.1). The Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial, Summary or Arbitrary Executions was informed that news of the application and use of the death penalty was also received during the period under review. Under current legislation, crimes which are not considered most serious, such as drug-related offenses and property crimes, are still punishable by death (E/CN.4/1999/39/Add.1).
