the Kenny Anthony administration was clearing the way for the resumption of hangings in St. Lucia in response to a violent crime wave that had been sweeping the country.
Attorney-General Phillip La Corbiniere said he recognized that there would be renewed efforts to stall the process once the procedures for hanging were pursued, but the he said the government was prepared to deal with any objections.
"Nevertheless the current administration is moving ahead on this matter and will tackle the others in the near future," La Corbiniere said.
There had been much debate on the issue but La Corbiniere pointed out that the constitutional framework of St Lucia allowed for the death penalty to be handed down.
“Let me say that in St Lucia we are very clear in our minds that there is no need at this stage to adjust our position on the death penalty," he said.
