SUDAN. REBEL FACES EXECUTION FOLLOWING UNFAIR TRIAL, SOAT

the human rights group, Sudanese Organisation Against Torture (SOAT) said it had been informed that a member of the minority Fur tribe, who live in the troubled Dafur region, was about to be executed by Sudanese authorities. SOAT said that 32 year old Altayib Ali Ahmed was scheduled to be executed in Kober Prison, Karthoum.
Altayib had been arrested on suspicion of working for and joining the rebel opposition and helping to organise an attack on Al Fashir airport in Dafur in April 2004.
He was sentenced to death in January on charges including waging war against the state, armed robbery, and undermining the constitution. SOAT said some of the charges were later dropped under an amnesty but not enough to stop Mr Altayib’s execution. SOAT also questioned the procedures of the Special Courts, through which he was convicted and said they fell far short of international standards of fair trials.
