Sydney lawyer, Rod McGeoch, who led Sydney's successful bid to host the 2000 Olympic Games opposed China winning the bid for the 2008 event. Rod McGeoch, said the Chinese Government's actions were "contrary" to the Olympic ideal, because it had little respect for individuality, justice or human rights.
Amnesty International says that at least 2,960 Chinese citizens have been sentenced to death and 1,781 executed in the three months from April to July 2001, in a recent crackdown on crime.
