Ten Trinidadian men were sentenced to death after a jury in Port of Spain found them guilty of killing a man they had kidnapped and held for ransom.
The 12-member jury returned the guilty verdict after deliberating for more than six hours. Attorneys for the condemned men, who were aged between 25 and 36, said they plan to appeal the ruling. Justice Stanley John of the Port of Spain Hall of Justice said they would be executed by hanging.
The 10 were found guilty of murdering 48-year-old farmer Thackoor Boodram after he was kidnapped from outside his home at Spring village in December 1997. A multi-million dollar ransom demand was then made to his family for his release.
According to the evidence presented in the court, Boodram was killed when he was shot in the head. He was later beheaded. The severed head was placed in a box and left for police to find. The rest of the body was burnt.
Boodram was the brother of Dole Chadee, who was hanged two years ago along with eight former gang members for the murder of a family of four.
