the expulsion of Saber, the Tunisian citizen held for Islamic extremism, 'is for propaganda' and above all is 'serious because it happened in total contempt of the rules and guarantees of the international accords to which Italy adheres.' This was the position of Sergio D'Elia, Secretary of Hands Off Cain, regarding last night’s controversial expulsion of Essid Sami Ben Khemais, alias Saber.
For D'Elia, 'beyond' the real risk the man faces returning to Tunisia, a country where torture is not unknown, the expulsion is for propaganda. He is the victim of the current climate against illegal immigrants: an iron fist and a ferocious face.' D'Elia emphasised the lack of respect of international rules by Italy: 'our country is bound by norms that prohibit the extradition or deportation of people in cases where, by returning to their country, they risk not only the death penalty but torture as well. The fight against terrorism is more effective if it is done in respect of fundamental human rights.
