Texas Governor Rick Perry vowed to review the cases of at least 16 Mexicans on death row in Texas. "We take death penalty cases very seriously," Perry said at a news conference. "Every one of those cases are reviewed by my office and by me personally before they go forward."
Perry had met with Mexican President Vicente Fox on June 23.
"He has my commitment to review each of those cases before they go forward appropriately," Perry said. "I assured him that each of those cases will be (looked at on a) case-by-case basis."
Perry said Fox talked to him about 16 to 18 cases in particular.
"I think we have made good progress on that issue and I think the president appreciates the focus and commitment that we made," he said.
In March, the International Court of Justice ordered the United States to "review and reconsider" the cases of 51 Mexicans on death row in US prisons. Of the 51 Mexican prisoners on death row, 16 are in Texas, Mexican officials said.
