Thai Anh Tu, a 19-year-old man, was sentenced to death in Vietnam for slitting a woman's throat in a robbery. Tu was found guilty of cutting the throat of 72-year-old Duong Thi Toan to rob her jewellery on October 19, 2004, the People's Court of Ha Tinh province said. At the mobile court, Tu's accomplice, 18-year-old Ngo Van Nam, was given an 18-year prison sentence. They were arrested only a few hours after committing their crime. In rural Vietnam, people are sometimes tried by mobile courts if there is overwhelming evidence to suggest they are guilty. The proceedings are presided over by local justice officials and often take place outdoors.
These trials are criticised by international human rights groups which say defendants do not receive a fair trial.
