The 13 Namibian secessionists sought by their government for terrorist attacks are in prison in Botswana awaiting extradition to Namibia. This follows a ruling by the Gaborone village magistrate's court that the offences for which the men are sought are not of a political nature.
The Namibian government had applied for their extradition citing high treason, murder, robbery and illegal possession of firearms as the offences committed by the men.
The 13 men were among 2500 Namibians who over the latter months of 1998 fled into Botswana from the Caprivi region of Namibia with Mishake Muyongo, leader of the Caprivi secessionist movement. Muyongo has since been resettled in Denmark by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
If these men are extradited they are likely to face the death penalty as some of the crimes they are being extradited for are punishable by death in Namibia.
