The 75 year old writer Gore Vidal was one of three people chosen by MCVeigh to be a witness to his final moments in the death chamber of Terre Haute in Indiana. The writer stated that he is not of a 'morbid predisposition', that he hates violence and is against the death penalty, choosing to assist at the execution because shares the same belief as McVeigh. ''We wrote to each other a few times, he's not crazy, he's very intelligent'', said Vidal. McVeigh wrote to him after reading one of his articles in Vanity Fair regarding what the writer believes to be the 'fraying' of American constitutional rights. Although not agreeing with what McVeigh had done, Vidal was said to appreciate its 'sense of justice' and declared that he would write an article for Vanity Fair regarding the execution or a screenplay on McVeigh and 'those of us who oppose the tiranny of the American state against its people' the writer said.
