A tri-member bench of Colombo High Court passed the death sentence to the suspect Christopher Valentine for assassinating the United National Party (UNP) Jaffna district parliamentarian T. Maheshwaran. The panel of judges chaired by High Court Judge Sunil Rajapaksa found the accused guilty of all counts including murder. The Tamil legislator, a former minister, was shot dead, in 2008, as he was celebrating the New Year at a Hindu Temple in the capital. The Tamil legislator escaped an earlier assassination attempt in 2004 and following his ultimate death in 2008. The UNP publicly accused the government of being responsible.
