The Australian government welcomed the conviction and death sentence imposed on Bali bomber Imam Samudra. Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said the outcome showed the Indonesian government was determined to pursue terrorists and terrorism. "The Indonesians are sending out a very strong message that if you become involved in acts of terror, then you risk your life," he said. Mr Downer said the Australian government did not support the death sentence. "But in these particular circumstances we won't be making any representations against the sentence," he said. The government took the same stance when another Bali Amrozi bin Nurhasyim was sentenced to death.
