The authorities of Zanzibar Island assured Russian Ambassador to Tanzania Doku Zavgayev that "two citizens of Russia sentenced to death will not be executed."
Zavgayev said he had met with the President of Zanzibar, which enjoys a status of autonomy within Tanzania. The president guaranteed that the Russians would not be executed, he said.
According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, Russian citizens Dmitry Kosyakov, born in 1978, and Ivan Ochirov, born in 1979, were detained in Tanzania on suspicion of murdering Alexei Sotnikov, born in 1982, on the Island of Zanzibar in December 1997. The death sentence was passed on them in April 2002.
