The Bishops of Pennsylvania have issued a restatement of their opposition to the death penalty. While acknowledging that "many in our church ... still support the use of the death penalty," the bishops are confident that "through discussion and teaching we can build popular support for a change of attitude and policy." While opposing the death penalty the bishops of Pennsylvania "wholeheartedly support legislation for a moratorium as well as a study of the theory and practice of capital punishment in Pennsylvania."
