The chairman of Tanzania's main opposition Party, Ibrahim Lipumba of the Civic United Front said at least 280 people had been killed in violence on Zanzibar on January 26 and 27. He said the dead included opposition protesters killed by police, people removed by the security forces from their homes and prisons and executed, islanders shot while trying to flee by boat and bodies dumped in the mass grave on Pemba.
