The Chaozhou Intermediate People's Court gave the death sentence to Huang Minghong and Ruan Junxian, in an open trial. Huang Minghong, ringleader of a crime syndicate, broke into the house of Zheng Huang, leader of another crime syndicate on December 13, 1998 and shot and killed Zheng with a pistol. A court investigation showed Huang had committed racketeering offences on 31 occasions either by himself or with others, gaining a total of 4.89 million yuan of illicit money. He also concealed three submachine guns and three pistols and certain amounts of bullets and antitank grenades. Ruan Junxian, the backbone of Zheng Huang's criminal gang, had killed two men and injured two others in four criminal cases and blackmailed them out of 590,000 yuan.
