The Chinese citizen Yin Zhi Hua, persecuted by her country for political reasons, consigned herself to the Italian authorities in Prato, in the presence of Radical MEP Gianfranco Dell'Alba and Tuscan Radical Party militants.
The Chinese dissident gave herself up following a press conference in which she asked for political asylum and publicly denounced the motives behind the extradition request, on charges of fraud, put forward by China towards her and her husband, Huang Jinsheng.
In August appeals courts in Florence and Bologna ordered the two be put on remand in prison following a request by the Chinese authorities to have them put under arrest.
Huang Jinsheng was already imprisoned in Italy at the time of the press conference.
If extradition occurs, "we risk the death penalty," explained the Chinese dissident during the press conference.
Yin Zhi Hua took part in the historic student demonstration in Tien An Men square in the Spring of '89 and, together with her husband, is a democratic militant and Falun Gong practitioner fiercely persecuted by the Chinese government and collaborator with a network of opponents to the regime engaged in promoting democracy in China and informing people in Europe of the communist dictatorship in Beijing.
Hands Off Cain is with Falun Gong in asking that international norms on the freedom of conscience and religion be respected in China, and in denouncing the use of the death penalty as an instrument of repression towards spiritual and religious movements in the country.
