A Pakistani court sentenced four men to death for kidnapping and raping a 13-year-old village girl.
The girl was kidnapped by a relative in July 2002 when she was home alone while her parents attended a wedding, police said.
The relative drugged the girl before abducting her to Muzaffargarh, where the other three men joined him at his apartment, police said.
The men were convicted of raping the girl over a two-day period until she managed to escape, said Farhat Rasool from Sheikhwala police.
Sheikhwala is the home village of the men and the victim.
The girl's parents reported the men to police after she told them what happened, Rasool said.
The Sessions Court handed down the sentences in Muzaf-fargarh, about 40 km west of Multan, Rasool said. He identified the men, aged between 25 and 30 years, as Mohammed Saddique, Israr
Hussain, Haq Nawaz, and Rashid, who uses only one name.
Violence against women and girls in Pakistan's conservative, male-dominated rural areas is common.
In 2002 a village council in the region ordered a woman to be gang raped as punishment for her brother's alleged affair with a woman from another tribe.
A court convicted the perpetrators of that crime and sentenced several of them to death.
