The Constitution of the Portuguese Republic (1976) at Art. 24 states: "Human life is inviolable. In no case shall the death penalty be applied." Portugal abolished the death penalty for ordinary crimes in 1867, and the last execution was held in 1849.
In 2001 Portugal parliament approved constitutional changes, including making extradition easier, to improve cooperation in the fight against terrorism.
