The Constitution of the Republic of El Salvador (1983) at Art. 27 states: "The death penalty may be imposed only in cases provided by military laws during a state of international war." This article is included under Title II, "Fundamental Rights and Guarantees of the Person." In July 1998, President Armando Calderon Sol called for restoring the death penalty on the same day that a university student was killed.
