The Council of Europe (CE) was disappointed with the fact that there were provisions in the law on the application of the new Armenian Criminal Code, which would allow the death penalty to be applied to criminals sentenced to death prior to 1 August 2003, when the new criminal code came into force, CE expert Ziman Christof told ARMINFO.
According to Christof, the provision in the law was a regress on the country's way to democratization. "The Council of Europe insists on full abolition of the death penalty in the member countries of the CE", he stressed.
Christof also said that the death penalty, as a capital punishment, must be replaced by life imprisonment.
