Since 1995 the death penalty has been a mandatory punishment for certain drug-related offenses.Kuwait introduced the death penalty for drug smuggling in 1995 in an attempt to curb the rising use of illicit drugs in the conservative Moslem state. The first drug-related executions were in 1998 when Kuwait hung two Iranians found guilty of drug smuggling.
