The death penalty is provided for by the Criminal Code and the legislation on civil disturbances for armed robbery, murder, treason, and offenses against the State. At least 200 people, mostly soldiers, have been detained and 146 of them executed in connection with coups in Nigeria since the first one was carried out in January 1966. The country's image was badly in need of a positive boost, with foreign investors largely shunning Nigeria since the results of the 1993 presidential elections were annulled by the former military government of Gen.
