The death penalty is provided for by various laws. It is mandatory for murder, as well as a series of offenses connected to the use of firearms and to drug trafficking. The Criminal Procedure Code (Amendment) Bill 1994 abolished trial by jury for capital cases. The death penalty has been mandatory for drug trafficking since 1996. Death sentences cannot be imposed in Malaysia on persons convicted of an offence if they are below the age of 18 (Section 16 of the Juvenile Courts Act 1947).
