The death penalty, suspended after the US-led coalition ousted Saddam Hussein, could be reintroduced when Iraq regains its sovereignty, Dara Nurredin, a member of the interim Governing Council, said. "When the sovereignty of Iraq resumes, I think this penalty will be back," Nurredin told reporters when asked if he wanted executions to be brought back to combat Iraq's rampant crime. He added that some countries had reintroduced the death penalty because "there are some crimes that need to be punished" by execution.
